This works well on PDFs that are essentially text: reports, letters, articles, plain contracts. Multi-column newsletters, forms with precise field positioning, and dense tables will come through simplified rather than pixel-perfect — for tables specifically, try the PDF to Excel tool instead.

Frequently asked questions

Will this preserve my PDF's exact layout and formatting?+

No — this pulls out the text and reconstructs it as plain paragraphs, in reading order. Multi-column layouts, tables, headers/footers, and precise fonts or spacing won't carry over. For straightforward text documents (letters, reports, articles) the result reads well and is fully editable; for complex layouts, expect a simplified version.

My PDF came back empty (or nearly empty) — why?+

This tool reads the text layer that's already embedded in the PDF. If your PDF is a scan or a photo of a document, there's no text layer to read — try the OCR PDF tool instead, which recognizes text from the image itself.

Are page breaks preserved?+

Yes — each page in the source PDF starts on a new page in the resulting Word document.

Is there a page count or file size limit?+

No hard limit — this runs entirely in your browser rather than on a server. Very long documents will simply take longer to process.
